I thought I would do a blog on different websites teens could visit to keep up to date with all the new books coming out. I am always wondering where the teens find out about books that have just been published – by looking around a book store? or searching the web? Here are some websites I have found helpful. www.yahighway.com has a website and facebook page which is a very good place to start. This year, Banned Books Week is celebrated the week of September 22.  This is a week to embrace items that have been Banned or Challenged over the previous twelve months, as well as previous years.    Banned Books Week celebrates a freedom – the freedom to read.  Working in a library, I love books!  Yes, I admit it, I LOVE TO READ!  I read just about anything – from cereal boxes to “How to manuals”, from “Scandal sheets” (as my grandfather called them) to what others might consider more legitimate newspapers, from the “Classics” to “Bodice rippers” – I read …

Books? in the library?

Some of you may have noticed the large infusion of gently used, almost new books into the children’s & YA collection.  Many of these books are from the now closed satellite library at the Boys & Girls Club.  Budget constraints made the closure of our off site library necessary.  These books are a welcome addition to our main collections since they are not 2ndcopies but ones that otherwise had to be ordered from the Boys & Girls Club. Come in and check out our expanded collection, both fiction and nonfiction! Remember September is National Library Card Sign-Up Month!

Grown-Up Girls Getaway

    GUESS WHAT!! Recently we had a slumber party here in the library!  No, not kids, not teenagers, but adult women!  Can you believe it?  About a year ago, a couple of our regular users and I were chatting.  One of them mentioned how much fun it would be to be “locked in the library overnight!”  From that comment the idea grew.  “Grown-Up Girls Getaway Sleepover in the Library” became a reality.  The ladies, ranging in age from early 20s to mid-life and beyond, began arriving around 7:00 Saturday evening.  We shared much food, laughter, and conversation into the …

What are we reading?

  I’ve recently read two great books, The Last Telegram by Liz Trenow and The Chaperone by Laura Moriarty.  The former is historical fiction dealing with Great Britain’s production of silk for parachutes used in WWII as well as a love story, and the latter covers the time span of late 1890’s into the 1950’s and includes a fictionalization of the life of silent screen actress Louise Brooks.  Both have well developed characters & interesting sub plots.   Charlene Bad Cat by Jim Edgar   Ever catch your pet in an odd pose or with a bizarre expression on its …
