Valentine’s Day – Did You Know?

“More than two thousand years ago, a holiday similar to Valentine’s Day was celebrated in Rome. But in those times the Romans did not call it Valentine’s Day.  They called the holiday Lupercalia.  Lupercalia means ‘feasts of Lupercus’”. “Celebrations of Valentine’s Day spread to other countries.  During the Middle Ages, people in England believed that birds returned from the south to choose their mates around February 14.  So Valentine’s Day seemed like a perfect time to choose a sweetheart.” “In Italy, young men and women gathered together in flower gardens on Valentine’s Day to listen to music and poetry.  In …

Music in the library!

How about a musical blast from the 1960s?  Aside from having musical CDs by some great girl groups (The Supremes, The Ronettes, The Shangri-Las) and some super boy bands (The Rascals, Lovin’ Spoonful, The Monkees), the library also has two specialty CDs that feature this era.  The first is a CD that is set up as if you were listening to a radio show from 1967.  It presents popular songs of that year complete with commercials and features Dr. Don Rose, the disc jockey from WQXL in Atlanta.  The other item is a series produced by Time-Life that each focuses …

A salute to our wonderful library volunteers!

Although we try to recognize & reward our faithful unpaid helpers throughout the year, the general population is probably unaware of the many hours donated by these outstanding men & women.  Many have a specific task that they complete or progress with each visit.  Their chores include inventory checking, story time programming, shelving, magazine maintenance, book sale support plus a myriad of other tasks.  Their loyalty and assistance to the library is prodigious.  Several have contributed decades of time and energy to the Gardiner Public Library. Many thanks and heartfelt appreciation to these outstanding patrons.

Icy Images at the Library

Ice berries!   Love the reflection of the lights!   Weeping in the snow . . .   A tangle of ice . . .   The path looks like a brook.   Interesting “claw” on the icicle!  A tangle of ice AND snow.   F-f-f-rozen Hydrangea. A peek between the branches.   What a cold looking snarl of limbs.   Lilacs in the snow . . .   The leaves are hanging on for all they are worth.
