THE CHILDREN’S ROOM

The value of the public library is often underestimated, especially with regard to the impact on education. Specifically, the public library plays a major role in helping children learn to read, as well as develop reading skills and comprehension. For example, the Children’s Room here at Gardiner Public Library offers a wealth of knowledge. The Children’s Collection is a vast assortment of print (as well as books on CD) which allows children to be exposed to a variety of fiction and non-fiction. Having such a vast collection contributes to student success beginning at an early age. Another advantage of the …

Family History – now’s the time!

Thanksgiving Day is also National Family History Day.  It’s a natural pairing: that time of year when we gather together for family, food, and fun also marks the perfect opportunity to gather family information. “Why didn’t I ask questions when I had the chance?” That’s the #1 rhetorical question we get here in the Archives.  Whether trying to fill gaps in a family tree or hoping to recall or confirm stories from long ago, folks are always wishing they had taken the time to ask questions and record information once upon a time. Teen Time at the Library!

Teen Time has started up again this year. Every Thursday afternoon after school a bus load of about 15-30 students are dropped off for about 3 hours to hang out in the library. They are given a snack from a local eatery, then socialize, play games, and do homework.     On Thursday of this week and next week they will get tours of the Gardiner Fire Station. Captain Pat Saucier gave the students a wonderful tour, they got to climb into the fire trucks and had all their questions answered, like “How much does a fire truck cost?”, “How …

Books Take Me Away

I recently overheard someone say, “It’s that time of year when you want to curl up with a good book, a cup of tea, and an afghan”. I couldn’t agree more.   This perfectly describes how I’ve been feeling lately in this cool, rainy Autumn weather. All I want to do is curl up with a good book and a hot cup of tea and I’ll be all set for the day. Personally, I love when it rains all day on a weekend. That’s my excuse to forget the cleaning, laundry, and paperwork. Unfortunately, I can’t do this too often, …
